“Holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14).
In this section we are attempting to answer the following question: “How does the believer enter into a state of holiness of heart?” By studying Scripture we will be able to determine the true nature of sanctification.
Almost every denomination has its own ideas about the great experience we call sanctification, but to study them here will only result in confusion.
What will shed more light on the subject is a study of the elements which constitute our nature. The faculties of the human soul are as follows, Conscience, Will, Mind, Memory, Imagination, Affections and Desires.
We are aware of such faculties since we use them every day. It is also true to say that each of these elements have been distorted, perverted, poisoned and made ineffective by Satan. He has gained control of every aspect of human nature because of sin. “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” (2 Corinthians 4:4.)
Yet that is not the end of the issue. The Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ was manifested to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8.) He came to sanctify the soul and bring mankind back to a perfect and blessed relationship with God.
As we take each of these faculties one by one we will understand the great work the Lord has and is performing in our souls. We shall see that He wants to sanctify us so that everything within shall bless His holy name. “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:23.)
