In the Beginning (part 2)

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1)

Introduction

God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit (the Trinity) created everything we can and cannot see. Without knowing this as an absolute fact we cannot know God in any personal way. Many claim to know Christ as Saviour, but believe that nature is a result of millions of years of evolution rather than seven literal days of divine work, therefore they do not have a relationship with Him and are not saved.

Who is God?

God tells us who He is in Exodus 3:13-14, “And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” He is the eternally existing One who has neither beginning or end. “Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure” (Isaiah 46:9-10) … “Which in his times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting” (1 Timothy 6:15-16).

The name Jehovah expresses the fact that God is self-existing, dependent upon none, and eternal in nature. None of the so-called holy books of the world religions point to the fact that God and He alone created the universe. Only the Bible reveals to us who God is by pointing to creation itself as evidence. “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20). Only someone with preconceived notions would reject the fact that the Divine Designer and Creator of all exists. “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:21-22).

The acts of God

Chapter one of Genesis tells us that God created time, space and matter out of nothing. Everything in the universe came directly from Him. He is the origin of all things, for nothing existed before God. “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8). He made everything according to His own wisdom, therefore He did not need anyone to direct, govern or manage either His design or His acts. “He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion” (Jeremiah 10:12).

God’s acts are literally His spoken word. He called into being the earth and all it contains. Genesis 1:2 tells us that “the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” No wonder then the psalmist writes, “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth” (Psalm 33:6). He alone had the power to create everything, so to claim that some kind of evolutionary process is the power behind creation, is to rob God of glory and honour. “The heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1).

The theory of men

If theistic-evolutionists are correct in their theory, then how sad that God had to wait until Charles Darwin formulated his idea of evolution to get the truth through to us! Then, what a failure the Lord Jesus Christ was, for He ought to have taught us what Darwin came to believe. “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds” (Hebrews 1:1-2). If Jesus was wrong about who created the worlds, then we had better look for another Saviour.

Was Darwin, Dawkins or Attenborough around when the universe came into being? If not, are their testimony, conceptions and theories sound? “Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding” (Job 38:4). Can they explain how the earth came to hang upon nothing in the midst of space and provide a perfect habitat for life? “He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing” (Job 26:7). To come up with any theory to replace the facts is proof enough that they are not thinking straight. By leaving God out of the equation man cannot think right. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Conclusion

God is the Creator of all things. “The everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 40:28). If He is not, then He does not exist, for there is no place for a God who is not the Origin of all things. If the opening chapters of the Bible are a myth, then the whole is a lie and only worthy of being laughed at. But creation itself speaks of His existence, therefore only a stubborn fool would believe in evolution. “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God” (Psalm 14:1).
