In the Beginning (part 3)

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1)

Introduction

Evolution in all its forms contradicts what the Scriptures teach regarding how this universe and life on earth came into existences. So-called Christians who have adopted this theory, instead of standing on the solid foundation of the word of God, set themselves as His enemies. In this part of our study we will discover the reason behind evolution.

The foundation

The Biblical account of Creation is fundamental to our Christian faith. The moment a believer dismisses Genesis as a myth, he calls God a liar, faith is lost and salvation is forfeited. Without a literal six-day Creation, a literal Adam and Eve, and a literal Satan to beguile them, the foundation that holds up the entirety of the Bible is undermined. Once we start placing the opening verses of Genesis in the realms of fantasy, then we will find plenty of other acts of God (miracles) that we can relegate to the level of unbelievable nonsense. “But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female” (Mark 10:6). How can a person hope that the Saviour of his soul will welcome him into Heaven if he states that Jesus did not know all the facts, believed in a myth, and needed Darwin’s intelligence?

Unbelief

Many would say that doubt and unbelief are the main reason why the theory of evolution was formulated and adopted by the scientists and educational systems of this world. In discounting the Biblical Record of Creation, they see no need to accept Christ as personal Lord and Saviour. There is an element of truth in this, for the Lord Jesus told Nicodemus, “If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?” (John 3:12). It is true that the unsaved mind cannot understand the revealed word of God. “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be” (Romans 8:7) … “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14). Simply put, those who hold to any form of evolution do not have saving faith. “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17).

The reason

Though unbelief is obviously one reason why people hold to evolution, it is not the root cause of it. The theory of evolution does not find its foundation in science but in sin. It is sin and sin alone that brought about one of the foulest and abominable concepts known to man. The theory started in the mind of Satan when he asked, “Yea, hath God said?” (Genesis 3:1). The question was not to get Eve to intelligently think things through, but to bring sin into the world through disobedience to God’s word. It was not the temptation but sin that brought in evil and death. “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12).

Sin is the root of evolution. In other words, evolution is a convenient alternative to God’s revealed word because man wants to sin without being convicted by the holiness of God. Cain found an alternative way to approach God because “sin lieth at the door” (Genesis 4:7). Once we see this, then we understand why people grasp at evolution as a reason why they will not come to Christ for salvation. “Ye will not come to me, that ye might have life” (John 5:40) … “This is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved” (John 3:19-20).

Evolution offers man a chance to cast off God’s law and to sin without fear of judgement. Mankind, including Charles Darwin, wanted to indulge in sin, and the only way to achieve it was to disengage the mind from any acknowledgement of God. “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful” (Romans 1:28-31). Darwinism robs mankind of salvation and the power to think clearly. Therefore our children are taught that they evolved from apes instead of being made in the image of God. They know nothing about either their Creator or Creation. “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth” (Ecclesiastes 12:1). But they do not and cannot escape the coming judgement. “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness” (Romans 1:18).

Conclusion

“For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away” (2 Timothy 3:2-5).

For those who believe that the Scriptures are sound in every possible way; it is their responsibility to preach, teach and defend them. But first we must study it ourselves so that we can show others the truth about who God is. “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15). Very often we will have to set about demolishing the theory of evolution, but it is certain that we have to get them to see that they are sinners in need of the Saviour. “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Timothy 1:15). Those who claim to be saved, yet remain convinced that evolution is true, they have ruined themselves. “Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck”  (1 Timothy 1:19) … “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20). No matter how scientific man’s excuses might sound for not coming to Christ, we must remember that they are speaking from a conscience that is seared by sin.
