1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
The Second Coming of Christ is the next great event on God’s calendar.
Jesus is coming back for His Church.
Will He find us ready when He comes?
Will we be ready if we die before He comes?
Preparation for His return must take into account that …
1. He will come as a thief in the night (:1-4)
a) What a surprise His coming will be for some! (2 Peter 3:10).
b) But that “day” should not take us by surprise.
c) This means we must be prepared because we don’t know when it will be. (1 Thessalonians 4:17-18).
2. His Return will spell doom for many (:3)
a) He will come when people are saying “Peace and safety”.
b) Tribulation is no indication that His Coming is near.
c) There will be no time to escape the destruction (2 Thessalonians 1:7-10).
d) For the saved it will be a day of glory (2 Thessalonians 1:10).
3. We should live as sons of the day (:5-11)
a) Those who follow Jesus walk in the Light (John 8:12, 12:35-36, Ephesians 5:8).
b) Children of light have cast off the works of darkness (Romans 13:11-14).
c) The light enables us to see – be watchful.
d) It means we do not sleep (in worldliness)
e) Those in the light are sober – alert at all times (Luke 21:34-36).
f) Take the promise of His Coming very seriously.
4. Armed and Waiting (:8)
a) Do you still have God’s armour on? (Ephesians 6:11-18).
b) Every element of this armour is vital.
c) Without it we are vulnerable to defeat.
5. Our Appointment (:9-10)
a) We are not appointed to wrath.
b) We are appointed to inherit eternal salvation.
c) Let’s not disappoint Him!
6. Comforted and Edified (:11)
a) Let’s remind each other about the Lord’s near return.
b) His Coming should thrill our hearts.
c) Inspire those who may be backsliding.
a) Are we prepared for His Coming?
b) Are we watchful, serious about it, desirous of it?
c) Are we actively encouraging others to be ready?
d) Be diligent!
