The Hunter of Souls

“Likewise, thou son of man, set thy face against the daughters of thy people, which prophesy out of their own heart; and prophesy thou against them, And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the women that sew pillows to all armholes, and make kerchiefs upon the head of every stature to hunt souls! Will ye hunt the souls of my people, and will ye save the souls alive that come unto you? And will ye pollute me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, to slay the souls that should not die, and to save the souls alive that should not live, by your lying to my people that hear your lies? Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against your pillows, wherewith ye there hunt the souls to make them fly, and I will tear them from your arms, and will let the souls go, even the souls that ye hunt to make them fly. Your kerchiefs also will I tear, and deliver my people out of your hand, and they shall be no more in your hand to be hunted; and ye shall know that I am the LORD. Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, by promising him life: Therefore ye shall see no more vanity, nor divine divinations: for I will deliver my people out of your hand: and ye shall know that I am the LORD” (Ezekiel 13:17-23).

Divination is just as popular today as it has ever been, and it seems that it always attracts more woman than men. “For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts” (2 Timothy 3:6). It will be prominent at the end of the ages too. “And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more: The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble, And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men … And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived” (Revelation 18:11-13, 23).

The prophet Ezekiel was commissioned to declare God’s wrath against the divination practitioners of his day, for they were the devil’s hounds that hunted down the soul’s of His people. The sad fact is that many were giving heed to the sorceries of the fortune-tellers and soothsayers of that day. The same has happened within the church too through the lies of the false teachers who hunt for money while claiming to be God’s spokesmen. “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not” (2 Peter 2:1-3). The “divine divinations” of Ezekiel 13:23 can refer to witchcraft, false doctrine, false religion and atheism.

They make it up

The mediums and false teachers always claim to speak for God, but what they say comes from Satan through their own ungodly minds. Unfortunately they will always find an eager audience willing to pay to listen to their lies. “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (2 Timothy 4:3-4) … “Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple” (Romans 16:17-18).

They seek to destroy

Intentionally or not, they are in the pay of Satan, and he will use them to destroy souls in a lost eternity. “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy” (John 10:10). He accomplices this through lies and half-truths. “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it” (John 8:44). Lies are the wares they sell. “The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?” (Jeremiah 5:31).

These people claim to reveal the way of salvation. “Will ye save the souls alive that come unto you?” (Ezekiel 13:18). They promise spiritual freedom to those who will listen. “For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage” (2 Peter 2:18-19).

If money was not part of the package then there would be only a handful of such soothsayers today. It is a job to them, one which is usually highly paid. “The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us” (Micah 3:11).

They want to weaken the church

When they mention Christianity it is only to undermine the church of Christ. They declare that the church has nothing to give to the people and should be avoided. Everything about spiritism, divination and fortunetelling is an affront to the righteous, and they know that they offend us. “Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad” (Ezekiel 13:22). In their attempt to breakdown the righteous, they encourage the wicked in their deeds. “And strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, by promising him life” (Ezekiel 13:22) … “I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah” (Jeremiah 23:14).

These hunters carry the ensnared to the eternal slaughterhouse called Hell. Those who believe their lies are delighted to hear about an easy way that leads to life, one which is opposite to what God has ordained, but they will find themselves suffering for this unwise choice before too long. “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12 & 16:25).
