“How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him” (1 Kings 18:21).
King Ahab and the prophet Elijah had differing worldviews. For Ahab, the ruthless monarch of Israel, it was interfaith dialogue, but for Elijah it was the fact that there was only one true God. Things really have not changed much since then. Our national leaders are still intent on unifying all religions into a single entity, but thank God there still remain those who stand opposed to such an abomination.
Ahab, along with his evil queen, Jezebel, had no regard for the God of Israel, but instead elevated the pagan god Baal. The prophets of Baal could do no wrong, even though they were known for their gross religious practices. Human sacrifice and blood letting was not beneath them as they attempted to appease their false deity. Baalism was not just a religion though, for it had a great influence in politics and society.
It appears that Jezebel almost single-handedly introduced Baal to God’s people, and for whatever reason, they were captivated by it. The true God, with all His laws, had become a burden to them, but Baal could be anything and everything they wanted. Basically this new religion freed them from the holy standards of God’s word and they felt at liberty to indulge themselves in all kinds of immorality. Their new god did not condemn anyone to Hell, except for the prophets of Jehovah that is.
Ahab and Jezebel realised that to avoid problems with believers in the God of the Jews they had to start an ecumenical movement. Their desire was to unite all religions as one under a single figurehead, which no doubt was the queen. This super-religion would only have one god, and it did not matter what you called him as long as her religious leaders were in charge. Resistance to this would be punishable by death. The people of Israel bought into this lie and worship God and Baal at the same time.
Our own national and religious leaders have deceived this generation too with exactly the same lie. Those who reject and speak out against unity with false religion are considered to be bigots and haters. Christianity is seen as something that must be eradicated from society. Why? Simple so man’s conscience will not be offended by the truth. “This is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved” (John 3:19-20).
Elijah pointed out to the people that there was not just one single choice as presented by Ahab, but in fact two choices. It was their responsibility to make a decision to either serve the Jehovah or Baal. To those Jews who thought they could serve both he plainly stated that they could not sit on the fence. There was no religious unity in Elijah’s theology or thinking. He forced them to see that a decision had to be made that day, tomorrow would be too late. If they believed that Baal was god, then they better serve him with all their hearts, but if they believed Jehovah was God, then they must forsake everything and follow Him. The sad fact is they were unwilling to make that decision. “If the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word” (1 Kings 18:21).
How sad it is to see born again believers in unity with pseudo-Christianity and false religion! Many have come to believe that all roads lead to Heaven, but in doing so they have had to ditch the teachings of Scripture. “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty” (2 Corinthians 6:14-18). All roads, bar one, lead somewhere, but not to Heaven.
The end result of following falsehood is just as it was in Elijah’s day. Those who have sold out to religious unity are guilty of stripping the church of its power and strength. Christians today have been browbeaten into silence and are unwilling to make a stand for the truth. Nevertheless we cannot blame our leaders, for we ourselves have failed to make a decision to follow the Lord.
Only after a demonstration of the mighty power of God did the people cry out, “The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God” (1 Kings 18:39). So today we wait for a revival to show this sinful world that only our God is true, when the fact is the power and authority has already been put in our hands. “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:8). If Jesus is Lord, all we need to do is follow and obey Him. The victory over Baal is ours already!
